Turnbull told parliament the day after being sworn in last week that he would not be changing the government’s refugee policy.

Ms Batty said she was particularly pleased to see a commitment to introduce respectful relationship education in the curriculums of all Australian schools from kindergarten to Year 10 by 2017.

TOM NIGHTINGALE: The former Victorian police commissioner, Ken Lay, now heads up a national domestic violence advisory panel.

The package includes .5 million over three years to train frontline employees, including police, social and community workers and medical staff.

“I’m saying that we have a commitment to renewable energy, that existed under the Abbott Government and will exist under the Turnbull Government, and my good friend and colleague [Environment Minister] Greg Hunt will be driving that agenda in many respects“.

There will also be training for hospital staff to recognise the signs of domestic violence, as well as a duty lawyer at selected hospitals to provide legal assistance.

“The vast majority of men do respect women, but many do not and we have to make it as thought it was un-Australian to disrespect women”, he said.

A particular aim is to create holistic services so women don’t have to travel around telling their story over and over, Senator Cash said.

Asylum seekers have always been a lightning-rod political issue in Australia, although it has not received anywhere near the number of refugees now flooding Europe as they try to flee instability in the Middle East and North Africa.

“Ultimately we’ve been very clear that people will not be settling in Australia”, he told Sky News on Wednesday.

She said practical initiatives included installing safety buttons and CCTV cameras in victim’s homes, as well as streamlining agencies and authorities who work with women.

The Government will also trial Global Positioning System tracking for perpetrators of violence.

WITH Malcolm Turnbull as Prime Minister, the Coalition’s fortunes have dramatically turned, with polls showing it is now ahead of Labor by two points – 51% to 49% after preferences.
