Santa Clara jail inmate dies in custody
The inmate was checked out by custody health staff, sent to a hospital shortly before 11:30 p.m. and returned to the jail facility shortly after 3 a.m. the next day, Hirokawa said.

On August. 31, four days after Tyree’s death, another inmate – a woman identified as 50-year-old Noriko Seales – died from natural causes, specifically a “stroke and hypertensive cardiovascular disease”, according to the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office.
The man, whose name has not been released, was found unresponsive at the jail’s North tower by a correctional deputy during a welfare check around 10:30 a.m. Monday, Santa Clara County sheriff’s Sgt. James Jensen said.
Two of the deputies are out on bail and are expected to enter pleas next month.
The man was released on September 19 for time served and was arrested the next day by Milpitas police on suspicion of two counts of assault and being drunk in public, according to Hirokawa.
Sheriff’s detectives will be doing a “complete investigation” into the death, including looking into whether force was used at the jail or during his most recent arrest, he said.
Jensen said the man was housed in an area where there are nurses on staff round-the-clock but could not specifically state the location within the jail, citing HIPPA privacy laws.
On September 21, a week before the inmate died, deputies noticed a behavioral change in the inmate, who was being uncooperative and hitting his cell door with his fist, Hirokawa said.
After trying to convince him to come out of his cell for roughly 90 minutes, deputies decided that a physical extraction was necessary, officials said, first deploying pepper spray, which proved unsuccessful.
At the same jail a month ago, three deputies are accused of murdering inmate Michael Tyree. A group of three correctional officers was accused for beating him to death.
The Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office will be performing an autopsy and toxicology tests on the inmate who died Monday, according to Jensen.
The man will not be identified until his family has been notified of his death, Jensen said.

County officials have also formed a commission to recommend other reforms to the county’s correctional system.
