Sooners prep for wide-open West Virginia offense

The Sooners were off this past weekend, but this coming Saturday they begin Big 12 play with West Virginia paying a visit to Norman. According to the Baltimore Sun, there was a players-only meeting this morning. “I think we’re as prepared as we can possibly be and look forward to getting in there and seeing what happens”. “We don’t know what the final product will be”.

As 17-point favorites, the Mountaineers had the spread covered 10 minutes into the game, led 38-0 at the half, eventually racked up 601 yards of offense (304 on the ground), all while the defense forced six Terrapins turnovers. They have good arms, and they are accurate. “There’s really a lot we can do to have a great season the remainder of the season”. He still is, in fact, at just 32, though he has completely restructured Stoops’ offense after a hard season a year ago. It makes the game all the more intense and, if victory comes Oklahoma’s way on Saturday, all the more satisfying. “I had my normal 7 o’clock meeting and I had no idea that there was a players-only meeting”.

“Defensively, they played great against Tennessee”, he said. “It kept us on our feet and made us think a little bit more”. In their non-conference finale against Tulsa, the offense got on a roll early.

It’s like a family affair, with a family tree that has more branches than anyone might imagine – all of them leading through the Hal Mumme and Mike Leach family of football coaches and the Air Raid offense they conspired to put together.

The Sooners then had last week off. “I reflect back – I have often – I said it (Monday) on my radio show, I reflected back to the bowl game with Michigan State and Baylor (last season)”.

The taking-it-one-game-at-a-time approach is as reliable a cliche as there is in sports. and was one several West Virginia coaches have turned to in the lead-up to the Oklahoma game. They’ve got good cover guys, good corners.

“I think you can draw upon the previous years”, Holgorsen said.

Leach, however, saw something in the young Riley, and talked him into becoming a graduate assistant. As Bob Stoops always reminds us, though, to be the best you have to beat the best. “We have to be creative and figure out how to have production in the run game even when they try to stop it”. “We’ve had our normal meetings all week long”. Oklahoma (3-0) has had two weeks off to prepare, and now it dives head-first into the meat of the schedule. “We had to change all of our cadences”. A few things we won’t tolerate: personal attacks, obscenity, vulgarity, profanity (including expletives and letters followed by dashes), commercial promotion, impersonations, incoherence, proselytizing and SHOUTING.

Holgorsen wasn’t fazed that the Mountaineers cracked the AP’s Top 25 this week.
