Islamic State militants are in possession of components for weapons of mass destruction, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned the UN Security Council meeting, urging that IS be included on an anti-terrorist sanction list as a separate subject.
The Russian minister added that USA officials believe that the coalition against the Islamic State terrorist organization can act without the approval of the UN Security Council, but Moscow believes that such actions violate worldwide law.
“The accumulation of crisis potential came close to the point where we can talk about the destruction of the political map of the region, ” he said“.
Russia’s deepening engagement in Syria comes as Putin and US President Barack Obama push rival plans on ways to defeat IS and on the future role of the country’s leader Bashar al-Assad.
The French minister said another condition for cooperating with other states is having “absolute clarity” about who the countries are fighting.
