Deven Bharti, Joint Commissioner of police, Law and Order, said that the two women constables have been suspended on grounds of misconduct.

The victim was brought to the Kalachowkie police station at 2 am on Saturday morning and charged Rs 1200 under section 110 of the Indian Penal code. The cops took Goswami to the police station and allegedly beat her with a lathi. “Why weren’t they beaten up”, she said. When she was denied permission by the volunteers, an argument ensued between the two, and the two police constables and a police sub-inspector deployed near the VIP gate intervened. “We have confirmed that she was indeed beaten up again at the police station and following this we made a decision to take immediate action, “he added. This is a very serious incident and we will ensure that no person who is guilty of manhandling is spared”, he had said”. The police also found independent witnesses who saw them assault the victim. DCP Dudhe will submit a compilation of the same in his final report on Wednesday. They requested her a few times to join the general queue, but she did not listen to the request and instead started abusing on-duty cops. Instead, they are using their power to intimidate devotees. The woman, Nandini Goswami, works as a background artiste in movies and had reportedly come to the pandal directly from a shoot.

When an altercation like this breaks out, volunteers need to quickly see the warning signs: given the numbers of people at the Lalbaugcha Raja pandal, one little scuffle or fight can turn into a possible roit. Police on Tuesday recorded statement of Goswami and her mother in detail. Three women police officials are then seen slapping her in the video as a friend tries to shield her from the police. She said she now regretted that she insisted on going to Lalbaug and wished to withdraw the case.
