The U.S. Department of Education has named eight Maryland schools 2015 National Blue Ribbon Schools.
Fountain Green Elementary has an impressive record of student achievement; a very active and supportive Parent Teacher Association and school community; and offers a variety of enrichment programs for students, such as the Lego Club, the computer club and art clubs.
The two parochial schools named are Cardinal Hickey Academy and Our Lady of Lourdes School.
In its 33-year history, more than 8,000 of America’s schools have received the coveted National Blue Ribbon Schools award. “The rigor and relevance of the lessons are important, of course, but it is the relationships that are fostered between every staff member, from the classroom, to the office to the custodial team that make Dougherty a National Blue Ribbon School”. State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister praised the schools for their hard work.
Coleman said Amherst Junior High School didn’t apply for the award or go out looking for recognition. “You represent excellence-in vision, in implementation, and in results-and we want to learn as much as we can from you”.

According to a press release from the school district, Lakewood Elementary, Myrtle Beach Intermediate, and Forestbrook Middle were among five schools nominated by the South Carolina Department of Education for the prestigious national award last school year.
