A South Dakota high school student shot and wounded his principal before an administrator tackled him to the ground, likely stopping a bloodier attack Wednesday, authorities said.

The shooter was a student who is in custody, Lincoln County State’s Attorney Tom Wollman said.

Holbeck says all students are safe and accounted for at the school.

Although school officials warned parents to stay away from the school about 10 miles outside Sioux Falls, a few gathered outside the school entrance to try to learn what happened. She says Lein later told students by intercom that he had been shot “but was fine”.

Harrisburg School Board members declined to comment.

Local media also reported that the principal at Harrisburg High School south of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was being treated for a gunshot wound and that the school was placed on lockdown. He said he was alerted of the incident by a parent who works in law enforcement, at which time he said children playing outside were immediately brought inside.

District administrative assistant Tracy Heiden said all students were safe, but the school was locked down. A shooter is in custody.
