Preliminary results: South Florida students did average on new test

So these preliminary results likely will provide limited information, showing how districts and schools fared compared to each other.

“It’s hard to know how it applies to school improvement or areas we need to focus on”, White said.

South Florida’s students seem to be pretty average when it comes to the new Florida Standards Assessment.

They add that when faced with similar problems, at least seven states have changed their accountability systems to lessen the blow of negative consequences for their schools.

Not included are passing rates and school grades that are based on the results. “What makes more hard is that now there are two different types of scores”. At the Florida Atlantic University Lab School in Boca Raton, 45 percent of students performed in the top group, the highest percentage in the state.

The rankings show that more than a quarter of students in Miami-Dade County ranked near the bottom for each of the six tests.

But it won’t be until mid-October that individual student score reports — ones meant for parents – will be sent to Florida’s school districts for distribution to their schools and then to families. Seminole County appears to have the highest scores in all subjects compared to other central Florida districts.

The state grades the exams on a scale of one to five.

FSA math: 33 percent were in the bottom quartile and 17 percent were in the top.

It will be like the system used for the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, or FCAT, which was Florida’s key standardized test for years until mostly replaced by the new FSA. Results also were issued for the end of course exams in Algebra 1, 2 and Geometry.
