The University of St Andrews and Dundee University have both had cause to celebrate after being named in the world’s top 200 universities.

The annual Times Higher Education list, in its 12th year, is among the world’s most influential rankings of colleges and universities.

Overall, 25 Canadian universities placed in the world’s top 600, including three in the top 50 – the University of Toronto (No. 19), the University of British Columbia (No. 34) and McGill University (No. 38). This year, 63 of the country’s universities are in the top 200, down from 74 last year.

“The United States still dominates the World University Rankings.(But) despite this achievement, the U.S. will have to watch out for countries in continental Europe, such as Germany and the Netherlands, and Asia, such as China, that may threaten its status in years to come”, the statement read.

Institutions believe new governance legislation which will introduce elected chairs of Court for the first time will impact on their autonomy and ability to make quick strategic decisions.

“The top 800 list represents just 4% of the world’s higher education institutions, so we congratulate all institutions who have made this year’s list”.

“Research in our universities helps drive innovation and we are supporting our universities to modernise their governance systems”.

“What it means in practice is that universities are always pushing to deliver more and better in every aspect of what they do”.

The university rated number one in the world is California Institute of Technology for the fifth year in a row.

University of Sheffield Vice-Chancellor Prof Sir Keith Burnett said: “I am very pleased for the talented and hard-working staff and students that the Times Higher Education World University Rankings acknowledge the reputation of our university as a globally-leading university, making a real contribution through excellent teaching and research”.

Carleton’s ranking was also affected by Times Higher Education’s decision to exclude from its analysis research papers with more than 1,000 authors.
