Mother of 4-year-old found wandering alone is arrested

She is being questioned by police, who said an arrest is likely and Nicks is expected to appear in court on Wednesday.

Hartford Police Department Shi’Day Nicks, 22, allegedly confessed to leaving out sandwiches and snacks for her 4-year-old daughter before slipping out of her Hartford apartment Monday morning.

Police in Connecticut say a four-year-old girl with ties to Meridian was found wandering the streets there Tuesday.

About three hours after she left, police said the oblivious mom returned home and was greeted by police who informed her that her child was in their care.

“She was able to make contact with the police department”.

Nicks said she was supposed to be home by 2 p.m., but the man asked for more time in exchange for money, so she stayed and he brought her home around 7 p.m. “Certainly the habits were outside the bounds of good parenting, again, lifestyle played a factor”.

Shi’day Nicks was charged with reckless endangerment and risk of injury to a minor after a passerby spotted Shafayla Nicks alone on Collins Street Tuesday.

Nicks is being held on $150,000 bond and is due in court today. There was no one in the apartment, but mail showed that 22-year-old Shi’day Nicks also lives there.
