Amtrak to begin charging excess baggage fees

The train operator says it will charge passengers $20 if they exceed restrictions for carry-on and personal items. A maximum of two excess bags is permitted per passenger.

Amtrak is boarding a baggage fee bandwagon that has generated billions in revenue for the airline industry.

The fee will apply to any passenger exceeding those limits. Parents traveling with children under the age of two can bring an additional item, such as a diaper bag or stroller. The fees are more extensive than what Amtrak plans. This does not count toward the carry-on or personal-item allowance. It’s about safety and space.

In contrast, the major US airlines made more than $2.6 billion in baggage fees in 2014, according to federal government figures. Where checked baggage is available, passengers can check two bags through to their final destination free of charge.
