Police have announced they solved a 1981 cold case in Arizona.

In April of 1981, police in Tucson began investigating the murder of an unidentified woman, and in 2012 the woman’s body was exhumed and new technology allowed her skull to be used for facial reconstruction, authorities told News 4 Tucson KVOA.

“For the family, it was at first a little bit of disbelief and then a sense of relief”, Detective Mark O’Dell said.

Detectives said evidence helped them to connect Gerow to a man named John Kalhauser who had a picture of Gerow in his possession when he was convicted of killing his wife about 15 years after Gerow disappeared.

Arizona authorities said Brenda Gerow had been living with John Kalhauser at the time.

Kalhauser’s wife Diane Van Reeth went missing in 1995, and four years later he was sent to prison after pleading no contest to second degree murder.

“We’ve been able to identify Jane Doe as Brenda Gerow”.

Pima County Sheriff’s detectives now have her name, who she was with before her death, and where she lived.
