Amelia on trial with Chelsea?

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has kicked off his rehabilitation after undergoing surgery to correct a serious knee injury.

The Daily Mail declares that Mourinho has invited free-agent Marco Amelia on trial as he looks to provide cover for Courtois, who’s out until January.

Chelsea only named 19 over-21 players in their 25-man Premier League squad and with five of those counting as home-grown, they could apply to sign and register a free agent outside the transfer window.

He also picked up a World Cup winner’s medal with his nation Italy in 2006, although he was only used as a third goalkeeper during the tournament.

After leaving Milan, Amelia played for amateur club Rocca Priora and Serie B outfit Perugia last season.

“We need a goalkeeper now, not in January”, the Portuguese said.

Mourinho ruled out a move for Porto’s 37-year-old Helton las week, but admitted he was in the market for an understudy for Begovic.

Jose Mourinho will therefore be praying his No.1 can get himself fit and back on the field as soon as possible, and while it’s obviously positive news to see him stepping up his recovery, Courtois still isn’t expected back until around Christmas time.

Amelia was previously linked with a move to Arsenal as a replacement for Ospina.
