The Department of Children and Families says they’re also investigating and are working with law enforcement.

Police said emergency responders were dispatched to an apartment on Wellington Street at 11:27 a.m. Monday after receiving a report of a toddler who wasn’t breathing.

Police say they did not see signs of trauma on the girl and that her exact cause of death will be determined by an autopsy.

Relatives and neighbors said there were two other children living in the home. The agency would not say if it had previously been involved with the family. “To me, there’s no need to take my sibling’s kids”.

Police have identified the 2-year-old, whose sudden death in a Wellington Street apartment is still under investigation, as Genevive (Gigi) Brown. Family members said the girl’s death was an accident.

The Worcester case came the same day Governor Charlie Baker outlined a major overhaul of DCF procedures that he said would make protection of children its top priority even if means separating children from their families.
