Strong spent the past few months trying to convince his son that he should trade in his convertible toddler bed for big kid bed, but his son was hesitant – until he agreed on an exchange for “the most awesome bed ever”.
He built the bed from four pieces of Ikea furniture: two Kura beds, the Trofast storage system and the Besta shelving unit. A pulley system, a slide, a ball run, and a secret door leading to a party room.
The secret room is large enough to fit an adult, outfitted with colourful LED lighting and a hidden sliding window the five-year-old can peek out from. There’s even a hidden trapdoor escape hatch.
A video of a dad transforming Ikea furniture into a bed for his son has gone viral. It now has more than 2 million views. Also keep in mind that it’s not just a bed.

“I have a couple of ideas for more kids-related IKEA hacks and other science-inspired/mechanical contraptions (my son is also a fan of Wallace and Gromit), but we’ll need to wait until him and his sister are a couple years older”. “There’s nothing else more risky about it than there is about dozens of things that are in everyone’s house”, he said to viewers.
