#6 Notre Dame uses second half to run over UMass

It was fleeting, but the Minutemen were running with the Irish early, closing the gap to 21-20 in the second quarter.

Navy’s specialty is warfare on water and bugging the heck out of the Fighting Irish football team.

The Minutemen are not expected to win, but Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said in an interview this week these are the kinds of games that concern him, when everybody thinks it’s going to be an easy win.

I like this, I like it a lot.

At the end of one run, three UMass players took a late charge at Prosise on the sideline and still barely nudged him over. It’s tough. When you’re playing a team like that, when they get a lead like that, it’s tough to come back.

Kelly credited his players for keeping their focus throughout the game and the season. Sanders became the first Notre Dame player to return a punt for a touchdown since Golden Tate in 2009.Notre Dame made it 35-20 when Kizer found wide receiver Chris Brown for a seven-yard touchdown pass with six seconds remaining in the first half. Frohnapfel threw 40 passes (completing 20 for 233 yards), so it was no surprise whenever he dropped back. Out of those 7 incompletions many of them were quite poor throws and lacking in sufficient accuracy. It can change the tone and direction of the game. “We’ll take the money and run”. Wimbush also showed off his arm on a deep ball to Will Fuller that would have been a catch if it weren’t for the ground jarring the ball loose. “The team is counting on me to make plays for us, and I’m gonna do that”.

He was ready last season for his new role as nickel back after struggling the season before with a shoulder injury.

Wimbush had a 58-yard touchdown run among his 92 yards on the ground. Irish fans may already know the story of DeShone Kizer, but the rest of the nation is just now learning his name. I’m excited to see more.

Suddenly, Malik Zaire goes down with a broken ankle in a close game against Virginia.

In all, 10 true freshmen played in the win over UMass.

Okay, maybe not that surprising.

The South Bend Chocolate Factory is just one of the businesses in downtown that sells Notre Dame themed treats and they say the store gets packed during football games. While that is a bit unusual, it’s not unheard of at Notre Dame.

Fun fact: Carlisle led the team in receptions (5) and finished with 65 total yards on the afternoon. But when mixed with good coaching and a good team, it gives an opposing defenses fits.

“It would mean we’re 1-2”, he said, laughing. The Minutemen offense is led by QB Blake Frohnapfel, who has 618 passing yards on the season. Greer Martini led the Irish in tackles.

Final Score: at Notre Dame 62, Massachusetts 27 1.

UMass” tackling – This technically goes with the first “down’ category, but it is so atrocious that it’s going to get special attention.

Red Zone TD Success: 100%. Williams scampered in from 14 yards out for his first career touchdown, while Adams ripped off a 70-yard scoring run.

Here’s how Kelly described the secondary’s play after four games. But it’s fun to see anyway.

The 0-2 Minutemen are coming off a fairly competitive loss to Temple, but at just an 18 point a game average doesn’t sound like much of a challenge – they lost by 34 to Colorado. I guess we can thank the first unit for demoralizing the UMass defense first. “We’re going to play football”.

Both Day and Isaac Rochell have had a pretty lofty work volume through three games. Through 4 games Okwara and Trumbetti have combined for 1.5 tackles for loss.
