Since wrapping Friendsin 2004, Schwimmer has worked as a director and appeared periodically in film and television, most notably alongside fellow Friends Matt LeBlanc on Episodes and Lisa Kudrow on Web Therapy.

Schwimmer, who became a Channel 4 perennial thanks to the constant re-runs of Friends over the years, will play an American producer brought in to try and save the floundering show of once successful media personality Gail Sinclair, the so-called “Queen of Daytime”.

The Commissioning editor for comedy at Channel 4, Rachel Springett, paid tribute to writer Julia Davis for drawing Schwimmer.

The six-episode show centres around a failing morning chat show – presumably parodying GMTV, BBC Breakfast, Good Morning Britain etc – was written by Nighty Night’s Julia Davis and will air in 2016.

Davis, who also created acclaimed Sky Atlantic comedy Hunderby, added that she is “looking forward to experimenting with friends whose work I love”.

It is one of a number of new sitcoms on Channel 4, including the last series of Peep Show, starring David Mitchell, Robert Webb and the return of Olivia Colman, which finished filming in September.

The United Kingdom broadcaster said he will play a US producer tapped to rescue a former hit British morning TV show which has fallen in the ratings.
