Volkswagen do not manufacture vehicles in Ireland but a large number of consumers could be affected.
In a further clarification, the company said an additional 30,000 cars may be recalled.
According to RTE, the recall will involve 34,387 Volkswagen passenger cars, 16,485 Audi cars, 4,365 SEAT cars, and 16,004 Skoda cars.
An global “online self-serve process” for customers to check if their vehicle is affected based on the VIN numbers will be set up.
Volkswagen also say that up to 30,000 used imports on Irish roads may have the software in their engine management system.
They said that this number represents the authorised vehicles sold through the authorised auto dealers across the country.
Meantime, it emphasised that all vehicles are technically safe and roadworthy.
In the United Kingdom, Volkswagen has suspended the sale of 4,000 vehicles which contain the EA 189 engines, and which are fitted with software that was used to con emissions testers in the US.
The company is devising what it describes as “technical solutions” for presentation to “relevant and responsible organisations” during this month.
“Volkswagen Group Ireland is committed to supporting all its customers and its retailers through the coming weeks and months”. Contrary to reports Mr Himmer responded immediately to a request for an “urgent” meeting though the exact date has yet to be decided.
The company said they will be notifying authorities in the coming days of their revised software.
