Volswagen said: “Step by step, affected customers will be contacted, with details of a process to get their vehicles corrected in the near future“. The company said the total number of vehicles affected comes to 1,189,906.

The charity’s chief executive, Dr Penny Woods, said: ” It is clear there is a dire need for a commitment to routine, independent real-world testing on all cars. Is there still more to this than we are being told?

He added that the company was strong and that rebuilding trust – and ensuring the majority of the 600,000 workers at the vehicle giant were not blamed – was its priority.

The letter said the fitting of defeat devices in VW vehicles “undoubtedly amounts to a misrepresentation and a breach of contract” and demanded a meeting with the company’s bosses.

Nissan, the UK’s biggest auto maker, said its model used in the test had an older Euro 5 engine rather than a new one compliant to Euro 6 emissions regulations.
