American service members killed in Afghanistan plane crash

A US defense official says a military C-130 transport plane has crashed in Afghanistan, but the status of the crew and passengers is unknown.

It was not clear whether the plane was carrying Afghan or coalition troops.

He said there was no immediate determination of what caused the crash and responders were still working to contain a fire.

Jalalabad is in eastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan.

US Army Colonel Brian Tribus told AFP that six of those killed worked for the United States military, while the others were civilian contractors.

No word yet as to how many people were onboard, according to Sputnik News, or if there were any casualties.

The C-130 Hercules is a four-engine turboprop aircraft used to transport personnel and oversized cargo.
