Steven Matz still stiff, won’t start Thursday either

“I just don’t feel comfortable putting him out there”, Collins said. Uribe’s potential availability for the NLDS remains questionable.

Mets left-hander Steven Matz was scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday against the Phillies after waking up Tuesday with stiffness in the right side of his back.

Terry Collins, who felt the Mets exerted so much emotional energy over the weekend clinching the division that the Mets were exhausted in this series, did not exactly have his A team out there Thursday. Collins sounded optimistic about the lefthander’s chances.

“When he goes out and pitches, however many times that is, yeah, the reins will be off”, Collins said. “The medication he got yesterday has made a big difference”. “We got to check these beds we’re sleeping in”.

The oncoming weather has already altered the Mets’ plans in one way. Meanwhile, Darin Ruf and Andres Blanco homered to help the Phillies complete a three-game sweep.

PHILADELPHIA-After surviving an array of scares and near misses, the Mets escaped Citizens Bank Park mostly intact on Thursday. The Mets have been cautious with him down the stretch, but the 26-year-old is anxious to break free of any restraint.

Cespedes was given the day off.

Flores had to leave Wednesday night’s game early because of lower back stiffness too. He was also out of the starting lineup. “If he’d pitch the second game he’d be available in Game 5”. He hasn’t played since as discomfort and soreness spread to his shoulder.

“He could be a key factor”, Collins said.

The three starters we can pencil in for New York are deGrom, Harvey and Syndergaard.

The Mets said yesterday that this injury was incredibly minor and that Matz would start on Thursday.

“Alderson said Harvey’s recently expressed desire to relax the innings talk will not materially change how the Mets use him in the postseason”, Rubin added.

Matz, 24, owns a 2.27 ERA and 34 strikeouts over his first 35 2/3 major league innings.

Then again, at least everybody went home more or less in one piece. “For me, that’s the only way you’re going to get the rhythm and the release points and stuff you need, is when there’s a little excitement in the air”.
