Texas Longhorns Football: Their Own Worst Enemy

Against Oklahoma State, the Longhorns had 16 penalties, including one that negated a third-quarter touchdown pass and two more crucial calls on Oklahoma State’s drive to a tying field goal in the final two minutes.

The display of leadership was a positive sign to Strong, who is dealing with a young team.

How historic would these three wins be? Defensively, Texas yields 276.8 yards in passing and 206.3 yards in rushing. Losing records just don’t happen in these parts.

Fairness, however, isn’t in abundant supply at Texas, where Charlie Strong’s hold on his job-he was handed the controls after the previous captain threw his hands up and popped the ejector seat has become increasingly tenuous. Half the remaining games are against teams now in the Top 25. Formidable but beatable. It will take near perfection from all three units – offense, defense and special teams. Lose this, and the likelihood of a 1-5 start is looming.

The Wildcats are an enigma because their non-conference schedule has been soft. A weak non-conference schedule doesn’t mean Synder won’t have his players ready to play.

The last outcome seems the least plausible, which should reassure Texas fans. All Synder did was draw up the flawless game plan and not only beat the Longhorns, but pitched a shut-out.

The Longhorns had a grand total of one offensive touchdown all day. One.

A road trip to Ames follows. Heard is Strong’s and Texas’-first great hope at regaining the program’s altitude. Unfortunately, a couple of them were missed, and we’ll correct that.

For two straight games now, the Texas Longhorns have managed to grab defeat from the jaws of victory.

Kansas is next, and as long as Joel Embiid and Andrew Wiggins don’t suit up Texas will roll in this game. Last season, West Virginia found more success on the road. Then they did at home (3-3). If it weren’t for the defense, the Bears wouldn’t have beaten Texas. Patrick Mahomes’ play is improved form of 2014. Granted, we played stout defense and passed a little bit, but we relied heavily on the run game.

“We’re going to do something different”, Patterson told Mendez. They’ve given away four on the year, but the defense has been picking up the slack with ten takeaways in the last three games.
