Phil Baty, Editor of the THE World University Rankings, said: “The results are trusted by students and their families, academics, university leaders, and governments”.
After the Pasadena campus, the rest of the magazine’s top 10 were the University of Oxford, Stanford, the University of Cambridge, MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Imperial College of London, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, and the University of Chicago.
It blamed its decline in the rankings on Times Higher Education’s decision to double the number of universities it evaluated.
The United Kingdom has improved its overall standing this year, with 34 institutions making the top 200, up from 29 last year.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015-16 has more Indian institutes from previous editions after the list was expanded to top 800 from 400.
The University of St Andrews also makes it into the top 100 this year, having risen 25 places to 86th in the world.
Meanwhile, Professor Sir Pete Downes, principal and vice-chancellor of the University of Dundee, said: “To be named as one of the world’s top 200 universities is something that institutions across the globe covet and we are determined to build on this success and fulfil our ambition to become Scotland’s leading university in all the fields in which we choose to work”.
Universities Minister Jo Johnson said: “It is great to see the United Kingdom is second only to the U.S. for the number of world-class universities in the top 80”.
The establishment has leapt up 24 places to be ranked 97th internationally – and is up three places to 15th in the United Kingdom – in the Times Higher Education University World Rankings, a respected list of the top 800 universities in the world.
