Indian President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday asked people to follow non-violence, peace and tolerance that was preached by Mahatma Gandhi, in a message that came against the backdrop of lynching of a man in Uttar Pradesh following rumours that he had consumed beef. It was around 5:10 p.m. when Gandhi left his room at the Birla House in New Delhi as he had for the last few years.
“PM Modi also used the occasion to re-emphasize Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of having a Swachh Bharat” in a tweet.
In his message, he also posted a picture, saying, “I bow to the proud son of India Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary”. On his left is Rajkumari Amrit Kaur. Pandit Mahan Mohan Malavaya is seated next to him and Jivaraj Mehta is seen standing on the extreme right. “You are late today for prayer”, he reportedly told Gandhi before pushing Ava, apparently, out of harm’s way and pulling a pistol ringing the three fatal shots from point-blank range. This one includes films, exhibitions of art and vintage photographs, and rare personal artefacts from the leader’s life, all from the collections of Kamal Morarka and The Osian’s Archive.
