Earlier Thursday, the Sheriff’s office said because this is a “mass casualty event”, identifying the victims and notifying their families could take between 24 to 48 hours.

“It’s more than just the politicians and gun control, it’s about the people that are affected”, Norris said.

President Obama was briefed on the shooting by Lisa Monaco, his homeland security adviser, a White House official said.

“The conversation in the aftermath of it – we’ve become numb to this”, he added, citing Columbine, Blacksburg, Newtown, Tucson, Aurora, Charleston – a litany of places now synonymous with mass carnage. We called 911 and called our parents, our loved ones… “We knew something was going on and this was for real”. “I have to have a Congress and state legislatures and governors who are willing to work with me on this”.

The U.S. college gunman who killed at least ten people before being fatally shot in a stand-off with police was originally from the United Kingdom, it was reported.

“We should politicize it”, he said.

According to Portland’s KATU News, the shooting began around 10:30 AM Pacific Time. The sheriff did not say whether the shooter was killed by officers or took his own life.

Counselors were made available at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Roseburg after the candlelight vigil.

Federal law enforcement officials said they were examining an online conversation on 4chan, the anonymous message board, as well as other social media trying to determine whether any of it was linked to the shooter. His father, a “Caucasion”, was not involved with his upbringing, Evans said.

Students, staff and faculty are evacuated from Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore.

“It’s sad to watch the families wait for the last bus”.

Umpqua Community College is a major institution in that part of the state, Manning says.

Douglas County Fire Marshal Ray Shoufler has said, “We arrived to find multiple patients in multiple classrooms”.

“Pretty much everybody knows everybody type scenario”, he said.

Welding said, “I heard a popping noise, nearly like a balloon popping”.

Freshman Kenny Ungerman told NBC that said he saw the shooter, dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, carrying a handgun as he went into the building, followed by gunshots and screams. “We all froze and bolted out the door”, he told local media. “I really think that if he wasn’t such a strong, young guy, he may have died”.
