Keira Knightley’s Broadway debut interrupted by man, flowers

This is the exact scenario Keira Knightley found herself in on Thursday as she took to the stage for her debut in Therese Raquin. ‘Keira, none of this is real!

According to the New York Daily News and other reports on social media, the patron got up, walked to the mezzanine railing, and began shouting, “Christ was born of a virgin!”

Speaking to Broadway World, one theatre-goer revealed that at first audience members “thought he was part of the cast, and trying to persuade the character to marry him instead of her cousin”. “Five seconds is too long to wait for a response!”

Security stepped in to escort the man out but let him go briefly.

“He then tossed the unwanted bouquet onto the stage”.

No telling what was in the flowers, but Gabriel Ebert, Keira’s co-star, kicked them off the stage immediately, to a round of applause from the now-stunned audience. They attempted to continue the performance, but a voice came over the speakers announcing there would be a short break before the show resumed.

While this may have been a somewhat frightening shock for the actress, Knightley’s extensive career in Hollywood has trained her in the art of playing it cool.

“I would say Keira did a very good job of keeping her composure. In fact, she kept reading her lines until the stage managers told her to stop”, Bange said.

As BroadwayWorld reported last night, several theatregoers stating they attended Thursday night’s first preview of THÉRÈSE RAQUIN have posted on separate social media accounts of a disturbance that stopped the performance.
