Brian Schnell, a police sergeant in Sunny Isles Beach, told WSVN the explosion happened at the top of the building.

Drivers on Collins Avenue are urged to avoid the area.

Preliminary reports indicate that the incident took place in a boiler room, and the explosion may have been caused by a gas leak.

Crews from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue are at the scene treating people who may have been hurt by the falling debris. Collins Avenue is reportedly shut down in both direction near the condo building.

People were being treated at hospitals for severe burns, but none of the injuries have been critical.

Footage showed parts of the top of the building badly damaged and debris scattered across the roof and in a rooftop swimming pool. “The debris fell on patrons at a hotel next door as well as beachgoers”.
