The Road Safety Authority has asked road users to take extra care on Friday due to the thick fog.
They have said that it will result in visibility being reduced to less than 100 metres in many areas.
This morning, heavy fog has been causing problems all throughout the country, with delays to public transport services as well as a build-up of traffic on busy commuter routes.
A Met Office spokesman said: “A ridge of high pressure across much of the United Kingdom will lead to clear skies and light winds overnight, a recipe for areas of locally thick fog to develop”.
Durham, Hartlepool, Northumberland, Sunderland and South Tyneside are all in the yellow affected areas, as well as Gateshead, Middlesborough and Newcastle upon Tyne.

The “be aware” alert is valid from 1am until 11am and is for the whole of Dorset.
