Man crushed to death by Williamsburg elevator at Espoir luxury rental building
A man was killed after falling down an elevator shaft in Williamsburg early Friday, according to the NYPD.

The building had several complaints in 2012 that the elevator would “jerk” and its doors would open between floors, according to the Department of Buildings.
The victim was with a group of people in the elevator of an upscale building located at 156 Hope St.in Williamsburg shortly before 4:30 a.m. when it suddenly dropped almost three feet, 1010 WINS’ Roger Stern reported. As he tried to get out, it moved and crushed him.
Witnesses told the New York Daily News a different story, however, “The elevator just dropped and then shoots up”, said Modan’s friend, Mona Zarrin Ramsdell. “As it went down, he tried to jump out because the doors were still open, and it shot straight up”.
Police responded to the scene and found the man unconscious and unresponsive, with trauma to the head and torso.
EMS pronounced the man, identified as Eran Modan, dead on the scene.
Residents of the building were shocked.
All violations have been resolved, with the elevator getting a “satisfactory” grade when last inspected on September 17, said Scott Schindler of Preferred Elevator.
However, a few who claim to have seen video footage of the incident say that the elevator, designed for up to ten people, was overloaded with 14 at the time.
“We do routine monthly maintenance on them”, said George Herling, who said he worked for P&W Elevators.
