Pakistan rakes up Kashmir at United Nations, Sharif praises China

Separatist groups in Kashmir today welcomed Nawaz Sharif’s address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) where he raised the Kashmir issue saying the Pakistani Prime Minister adopted a “realistic stand”.

India issued a swift rebuttal, accusing Pakistan of claiming to be the first sufferer of terrorism whereas “in fact, it’s truly a sufferer of its personal coverage of breeding and sponsoring terrorists”.

To de-militarize Kashmir is not the answer, to de-terrorize Pakistan is.

He said the dossiers include details of alleged “Indian interference and support for terrorism in Balochistan and Karachi as well as its security and intelligence agencies’ link with the Tehrike-e-Taliban especially in FATA (Federally Administered Tribal Areas)”.

She gave the statement on behalf of her prime minister, Narendra Modi, who didn’t turn up on the occasion.

“Our environment and context need to be understood”, he said, adding, “We want to finish terrorists and their nurseries”.

It is, except that the occupier in question is Pakistan.

Nawaz Sharif had urged India to formalise and respect the 2003 understanding for a complete ceasefire on the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir.

Sharif suggested four ways for a new peace initiative with India.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Thursday that India was ready for a dialogue with Pakistan based on just one point, “give up terror”, and will address all outstanding issues if it gets a positive response.

“It needs no imagination to figure out which side initiates this exchange”, he said, adding that it is not uncommon for states, when confronted with serious challenges, to shift responsibility on others.
