Android TV Adds Content, Device, Pay TV Partners

As posted to the official Android blog yesterday, the HBO Now, Showtime, and CBS All Access applications are now available for owners of an Android TV. Even better, Google said Disney Movies Anywhere can now be accessed through the platform as well, while Epix, WWE and UFC are also available.

Google has announced a wide range of new device and telco partners to provide Android TV-based devices and services.

A few apps such as Vudu and HBO Go, however, are still notably missing. Showtime seems to be in the same situation, with only select Android TV-powered devices able to access its app. “And today, we’re adding to your list of options by welcoming Hisense, TCL, and several other smart TV manufacturers to the Android TV family”. Previously, OEMs like Sony, Sharp, NVIDIA, and Razer have also been available. Set-top box manufacturers like Pace, Sagemcom, and Technicolor, along with Pay TV services such as KDDI and Telecom Italia are all going to be partnering with Android TV and including the system with their various products. Hopefully this will be resolved soon – in the meantime you can use HBO Now on your phone, then stream it to an Android TV device using the built-in Chromecast support.

While I’m excited to see Android TV continue to grow there are still issues that need to be worked out. Google says it’scommitted to both platforms.
