But Carnes, along with Levine and Alcaraz, were among nine people shot and killed in a rampage at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, on Thursday morning by gunman Chris Harper-Mercer, 26. The death toll remains at 10, including the shooter.

Alcaraz’s sister posted an emotional tribute to her sister on her Facebook page. Her sister Maria wrote on Facebook that she hasn’t been able to sleep since her passing.

“Obviously we are family, and this hurts”, Marlar said.

Among the victims are the class professor, and several teenagers, including students who were in their first few days of college.

“Quinn was amusing, sweet, compassionate and such a wonderful loving person”, the family said in a statement released by police. He always stood up for people.

Levine, a native New Yorker, had published pieces of writing in fly fishermen’s magazines and had written more than one unpublished novel, a friend, who asked not to be named, told Reuters.

Kim Dietz, 72, a divorced mother of a grown daughter, was confirmed dead by her college friend and later by her ex-husband. He graduated Roseburg High School with high academic marks. “They felt Jason had finally found his path”, the statement said.

Quinn Glen Cooper, of Roseburg, was 18 years old.

“I don’t know how we’re going to move forward without him, our lives are shattered beyond fix”, a family member said during a news conference. Thursday was his fourth day of college.
