The American Planning Association has named it one of 5 Great Streets on the group’s annual Great Places in America listing.
The APA recognizes locations around the country which help provide community socialization, economic growth and help lead other parks in America to follow their example.
Carol Rhea, the president of the association cited that public spaces are quite essential. Places are selected annually and represent the gold standard in terms of having a true sense of place, cultural and historical interest, community involvement, and a vision for the future, the statement said. In 1915 the park played host to the Panama-California Exposition celebrating the opening of the Panama Canal, which defined much of the way the park looks today.
Visit www.planning.org/greatplaces for more information about these neighborhoods as well as APA’s top five Great Streets and top six Great Public Spaces for 2015.
The park has played a vital role in San Diego’s history and contribution to culture.
The APA would also like to extend an invitation to the public to vote on their favorite space not listed in their official selections.
During the first half of October, individuals can offer suggestions via APA’s social media channels using the hashtag #greatplaces.
