Dell preparing a Transformer-like convertible tablet with 4K display

Dell made legacy with its laptops, now it is no secret that the company is making its way up into the tablet industry along with running up against the smartphone industry leaders.

So like the current XPS 13, it will be slick looking, lightweight, and will benefit from a screen which is something of a work of art. Nothing really needed changing on the outside, let’s face it, but the alleged changes to the internals will make this Dell notebook an even more compelling offering. Yet Dell hasn’t redesigned the system since its release in 2012, and it’s now outclassed by thinner competitors.

Winfuture.de brings news of this refresh, and notes that the laptop will keep the same thin bezel around the screen – a feature which Dell calls its borderless infinityEdge display – with aluminium used on the lid and base of the chassis, and carbon fibre for the palm rest. Now Dell has given us a better look thanks to a product listing on its website (which has been removed).

This new Dell XPS tablet will run on Windows 10, so the same as Microsoft’s upcoming Surface 4 Pro, although it will be going head-to-head with the likes of the new Pixel C and the iPad Pro. Here, however, the keyboard is more like a dock reminiscent of ASUS’s design on the 2-in-1 tablet/laptop hybrid. Two keyboard options will be available: one designed for mobility with its thinner and lighter body and a second one that’s heftier due to an extra USB Type-C port, two USB 3.0 port and an HDMI port. The stylus will be an active digitizer pen, as well.

Under the hood, the XPS 12 is powered by Core M processors.

The other specifications outline the XPS 12 as a high-end system.

As the images above show, the Dell XPS 12’s core tablet element will slot into a solid keyboard dock for a more traditional laptop experience than that provided by the somewhat precariously propped Microsoft Surface family. That’s a lot, but it’s in line with other premium 2-in-1s – don’t get your hopes up if you have less than a grand to spend. But, given that this came from a “coming soon” page, it’s reasonable to expect we’ll see it this holiday season.
