Cornell ranked No. 18 best university in world

The National University of Singapore is the number one institution in Asia – the first time the city state has claimed the continent’s top spot in the rankings’ 12-year history.

On NUS, Mr Baty said its new position as Asia’s top university and among the very best of the world’s elite research universities is “thoroughly deserved”.

AUSTRALIAN universities have performed strongly in the latest global rankings, but the government needs to boost higher education funding to sustain the trend, a key monitoring group says.

The universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, St Andrews, Aberdeen all feature again in the annual listing, and all four moved up in ranking while Dundee re-entered the top 200, ranked 185 in this year’s table.

But MSU is the only Russian university that made the top 200.

The result also follows up from ETH’s recent top ten placing in the authoritative 2015/16 QS World University Rankings.

“But it will have to work harder to compete with other emerging economies such as China, which has 37 institutions in this year’s rankings, and the Russian Federation, which has fewer institutions overall but a higher proportion in the upper echelons of the table”, explained Baty. “This ability to attract excellent global teachers, researchers and students depends significantly on us having a high quality university system that produces worldwide rankings that demonstrate our quality to academics and students”.

American universities still dominate in the THE World University Rankings 2015-2016.

Andhra University earned a rare distinction by finding its name in the list of the world’s top universities released by Times Higher Education Rankings. Exeter has consistently appeared in the top 10 university rankings across Britain. The top five overall are California Institute of Technology, University of Oxford, Stanford University, the University of Cambridge and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “There is no doubt that Israel owes its continued success as a research powerhouse and Start-Up Nation to the contributions of the Hebrew University community and our colleagues at Israel’s other institutes of higher education”.

The Times Higher Education (THE) magazine today published its rankings, which have expanded to 800 institutions from 70 countries.
