Donna Shalala, former Clinton cabinet secretary, suffers stroke

Donna Shalala, a cabinet secretary under former US President Bill Clinton and the head of his family’s charitable foundation, has suffered a stoke. The statement said she had been taken to the hospital by colleagues who were with her and that “initial reports are very encouraging”.

Shortly after becoming President in 1993, Clinton nominated her as secretary for health and human services, a post she held for eight years.

The foundation has come under renewed scrutiny since former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the wife of Bill Clinton, kicked off her campaign for USA president in April.

According to the newspaper, President Clinton visited Shalala and had “a good conversation” after surgery.

“As a few of you may have heard, Donna suffered a stroke this evening after CGI”, the email read. The report said that Shalala was alert and joking with the former president.

The 74-year-old is now seeking medical treatment in a New York hospital after falling ill Tuesday night at the Clinton Global Initiative, according to the New York Times.
