Twins eliminated from wild card with 5-1 loss to Royals

This postseason bid by the upstart Twins took a big hit.

Kansas City Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura throws against the Minnesota Twins in the first inning of a baseball game, Saturday, October 3, 2015, in Minneapolis. “It’s deflating for sure”. Moustakas singled to right, Zobrist to third.

“This is a hard one to swallow”, Hunter said. They now sit 1.5 games back of the Astros for the final Wild Card spot, pending the outcome of Houston’s Friday showdown with the Diamondbacks. With two days left to make up ground this was as devastating a defeat as they’ve had in 2015.

A similar play involving shortstop Eduardo Escobar cost the Twins a 4-3 loss two Saturdays ago against the Los Angeles Angels.

“Pitching in games this late in the season is more fun than it is nerve-wracking”, Milone said. The paid attendance of 31,534 wasn’t quite a postseason crowd, but there was a palpable energy in the ballpark, with a hearty standing cheer for Santana as he walked off the mound and doffed his cap in the eighth. “You just knew it was going to be a tight game”.

The Twins are out of the playoff race, and the Royals are still looking to lock up the top seed in the AL.

Twins catcher Kurt Suzuki also was charged with an error in the second when he bumped into Milone as they pursued a popup by Salvador Perez.

Tommy Milone pumped his fist into his glove in exuberance as he stalked off the field after six strong innings, but the Royals struck for four runs just as soon as he was gone, largely helped by Minnesota mistakes.

“We still have to try to win (Saturday) and hopefully have to cause the other teams to win as well”.

Ryan Madson pitched in the ninth because closer Wade Davis had a stiff back. But their 5-1 loss to the Royals at Target Field, featuring another listless performance at the plate and several unnerving breakdowns in the field, hurt just the same.

Royals third. J.Dyson doubled to right.

“They’re very trivial, day to day, probably overly cautious concerns”, he said. “Nothing we can do”, Santana said.

“We’re all are aware that it’s not coming out quite the same”, Molitor said. I definitely think that there’s a chance for me to come back.

Eric Hosmer leads Kansas City with 178 hits and 93 RBI while Lorenzo Cain and Kendrys Morales have combined for 178 RBI.

After watching Chris Young strike out the side in the sixth inning, Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost approached his starter in the dugout to tell him he was nearing his pitch limit. Cueto has allowed eight earned runs in his last 20 innings over his last three starts after giving up 28 earned runs in 26 1-3 innings between August 21 and September 13.
