LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition: Tech giant launches first Android Wear smartwatch

The Watch Urbane Second Edition might be able to spark a few life into Android Wear, especially if it is promoted on the Google Store, but it lacks any big changes to jolt LG ahead of other competitors in the smartwatch market.

The 2nd Edition LG Watch Urbane has an IP67-certified stainless steel body that measures 44.5mm wide and 14.2mm thick.

The LG Watch Urbane 2 is powered by the 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400.

Internally there are a number of significant upgrades, the biggest being a 4G LTE chip and cellular connectivity.

Internal storage remains the same (4GB), both models are IP67 certified water and dust resistant and provides a heart rate monitoring sensor (PPG).

Announced on the company’s Korean site, the watch has a sleek design with three physical buttons (the new buttons appear to be linked to contacts and apps) and black, white, blue, or brown straps. While the company did not indicate any particular providers, AT&T is now the most competitive US mobile provider for smart watch fans. Compared to other Android Wear devices in the market today, it boasts of one of the highest screen resolutions, 480×480 crammed in a 1.38-inch full cicular P-OLED display. In the trailer, which aired at the event, he uses his new Urbane Watch to make a rescue phone call.

LG on Thursday unveiled the first Android Wear smartwatch that doesn’t require a phone to connect to the Internet. It tends to cite customer surveys at every one of its launches since the G2, and Dr. Ram-chan Woo, LG’s VP of product planning, said making calls was the No. 1 thing LG smartwatch users requested.

Speaking of key LG Watch Urbane 2 specifications, the device comes with support for cellular connectivity on board.

Truth be told, the Watch Urbane 2 looks pretty much like the Watch Urbane LTE, but with time with Android Wear running the show. It’s hard to see many people wanting to leave their phones at home on a regular basis, so the solo-flying watches end up largely relegated to occasional uses like trips to the gym or jogs.
