The Great British Bake Off: Richard Burr’s semi-final verdict

Tamal Ray, Ian Cumming and Nadiya Jamir Hussain will do battle for the Bake Off crown in the tent next Wednesday. I really admired her resolve at not allowing comments like “overbaked”, “badly split” and “dry as a bone” get to her. With only four of them left it was easy to rank them in the first challenge: Nadiya, Tamal, Ian, Flora.

After the technical result – Flora, Tamal, Ian, Nadiya – Ian looked like he was in the most trouble for day two.

Flora’s signature challenge, a passion fruit and chocolate tart with macarons, also failed to impress with its flavour.

One viewer wrote: “Handshake for Nadiya, I’m so happy”.

The Technical saw the teen redeem herself though, despite a wobbly start to the fiendishly tricky chocolate souffle challenge.

Speaking about her failure to make the final, Flora admitted: “There were moments when I did feel my age and that I was lacking a certain experience”.

THE BBC baking show has captured the nation’s attention, and now it will appear live in Edinburgh.

But forget about Flora being knocked out, all anybody could talk about was the face Ian was still in it after Chocolate Week.

Flora seemed to lose her nerve as her normally immaculately finishes were replaced with the ‘messiest piping I’ve ever done in my life’.

Another added: “I love how much Nadiya swooned then when Paul shook her hand #GBBO”.

But she appreciated the positive feedback: “Mary said quite a few of my bakes were handsome which is a really nice thing, and Paul said my combination of flours in bread week were bang on”.

On the other end of the scale was Nadiya who wowed once again with her peacock, which Paul gushingly told her was a ‘piece of art, ‘ while Mary struck the final blow for Flora’s creation by declaring: ‘It looks good AND it tastes good’. Because of the distance Flora always makes sure the larder and freezer is regularly stocked with ingredients, so she can bake cakes and loaves for the rest of her family.

Flora already has 12,000 followers on Twitter, as well as an online blog which she regularly updates with recipes. “It would be a huge shock if Tamal managed to steal success from under her nose”. She should feel cheated if she’s not making £150,000 a year. The paranoid head-fu** of a show focuses on a small town GP who realises she can’t trust anyone around her, leading to… well, one or two bad life decisions.
