Hurricane Joaquin hammers the Bahamas as Canadian centre tracks its path

It was expected to pass just west of Bermuda, well off the USA coastline, on Sunday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

By mid-morning Friday, water was flowing over South Main Street on Virginia’s Chincoteague Island. A statement said the road was closed from the Pony Pen to the Hatteras Ferry terminal.

“It’s going to be enormous”, meteorologist Ryan Maue of Weather Bell Analytics said.

Christie told residents Friday to be prepared to respond to flooding and power outages and said that shelters will be available if needed.

“I’m a good citizen and I’m going to obey”, Shirley Jones of Charleston said of official advisories to stay home and out of the knee-deep water.

The flooding threat will continue into next week as rainfall collects in swelling creeks and rivers.

A house that sat along the Hereford Inlet side of Grassy Sound in Middle Township, N.J., is washed into the back bay waters during the overnight high tide and heavy winds Saturday.

Once the rain ends, the threat of flooding persists because the ground is too saturated to absorb water, meteorologists say.

The Canadian Hurricane Centre says it is monitoring hurricane Joaquin, which may move into Canadian waters early next week. A faster motion toward the north or north-northeast is expected Friday night and Saturday.

Earlier in the week, forecasters thought the storm could make landfall in the USA, but they’ve backed off those predictions. To the northeast, one person died and another was injured in a crash near Fayetteville, North Carolina, when a tree fell across an interstate and hit two cars. “We’ll be hitting this thing very hard in the morning”, he said. Heavy rain was forecast for the area into Sunday.

Gordon says the driver of the vehicle Sharifian was in was taken to Cape Fear Regional Medical Center for treatment.

There was no immediate word on his condition.

Floodwater rose to the top of vehicles’ tires at a Whole Foods store in Portland, stranding drivers, WMTW reported.

The utility also has overhead line contractors and tree crews ready to be deployed, and said it had been in discussions with the North Atlantic Mutual Assistance and Southeastern Electric Exchange groups to secure outside utility crews.

Coast Guard officials in Miami say the rescue took place Thursday evening as the area experienced heavy weather caused by Hurricane Joaquin (wah-KEEN’). Officials say several other roads in Kent and Sussex counties also have been closed because of flooding.
