“You really never know what this student would have done if they haven’t confronted him”, Holbeck said.

The two began to argue, and eventually the student, who has yet to be identified by authorities, allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Lein in the arm, Lincoln County Sheriff Dennis Johnson said.

The principal of a Harrisburg, South Dakota high school was wounded Wednesday morning in a shooting. “What those guys did probably helped save someone else from getting shot”, Superintendent Jim Holbeck said.

South Dakota has seen a handful of firearm incidents at schools.

Although school officials warned parents to stay away from the school about 10 miles outside Sioux Falls, a few gathered outside the school entrance to try to learn what happened.

“Something’s just going on inside of him and he’s just mad at everybody, I think”, explained the shooters father.

Day care nearby: Travis Hendrix takes care of about 170 kids at his Tiger Tots daycare facility across the road and to the east from where the shooting reportedly occurred.

From the moment that Buhl supposedly fired the single shot that hit Lein, the principal has maintained a positive outlook.

Stephenson was found in possession of a handgun on the premises of Apple Valley Middle School on Thursday.

Holbeck lauded the bravery of his staff and said the school district’s attention has turned to reuniting students with their families.

Harrisburg School Board President Mike Knudson is describing as all three men involved as heroes. He appears to have acted alone, and police did not say whether he targeted Lein. Harrisburg Junior Ivy Berg says she has relied on her religion to get through what happened.
