Two killed in attack in Jerusalem

A group of around 50 women as well as several men protested outside a gate before demonstrating inside the neighbourhood, where they were blocked by police.
“Two people murdered in terrorist attack in old city, Jerusalem by Palestinian terrorist this evening”.
The three dailies explained that Palestinians were shot by live ammunition in the Jerusalem’s towns of al-‘Issawiya and ‘Anata.
“The Israeli actions are an indication that (Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin) Netanyahu is trying to avoid his obligations to end this conflict and is trying to legitimise the illegal building of Jewish settlements in the occupied Palestinian Territories”, Erekat said.
Though not at the levels of previous Palestinian uprisings, or “Intifadas”, it has triggered concerns of a wider escalation.
“What’s happening today is a renewal of Israeli arrogance and recklessness”, Hatem Abdul Qader, a Jerusalem official for the governing Palestinian party Fatah, told Palestine TV.
The two-year old child that was involved in this violent act was taken to the hospital with a minor leg injury.
In a separate incident on Saturday, a Palestinian man stabbed a passerby in west Jerusalem before being shot dead by police while he was fleeing the scene.
The Palestinian Liberation Organization, which governs the West Bank, tweeted Saturday that 35 Palestinians had been killed and 750 injured by security forces or Israeli settlers since January.
The victims are said to be from an ultra-Orthodox Jewish family who were walking to the Western Wall.
The attacker in the earlier stabbing has been identified at Mohannad Halabi, 19, a Palestinian law student living near Ramallah and studying at Al Quds University.
Hamas, the Islamic militant group that rules Gaza, issued a statement praising the attack. Spokesman Husam Badran congratulated Palestinians on the killings and referred to the shooting as a “heroic operation”.
Violence has risen in Jerusalem and West Bank in recent weeks.
The compound is the third-holiest site in Islam and the most sacred in Judaism. The site is located in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem.

The Jewish Sukkot Holiday, lasting eight-days, started last Sunday and has been going on all week. Israel’s military deployed hundreds of troops in the West Bank on Friday, a day after a drive-by shooting by suspected Palestinian gunmen killed a Jewish settler couple driving home with their children.
