The Porsche Spyder was being driven by British millionaire tycoon Paul Bailey, from the East Midlands. He was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident. She later put off a trip to the United Kingdom in order to visit the injured at Mater Dei. The local authorities have urged motorists to avoid the areas of Hal Farrug, Luqa, Qormi where the Ambulances are transporting the wounded to the Mater Dei Hospital. In a tweet, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said he briefly visited the hospital and said that the Mater Dei staff are well prepared and doing their utmost.

A spokesman for event organizers told the Times of Malta that an investigation into what caused the wreck would have to occur, noting that the vehicle or wheel possibly developed a fault with the professional driver behind the wheel. He said he was proud by the response of the hospital staff.

Speaking to the media, Mrs Coleiro Preca said that what was a happy event turned into a tragedy and that the office of the presidency is to give all the necessary support to the people who were injured. He was among those injured. The Hospital has also issued an urgent appeal for blood donors.
