3 new Mormon leaders give first remarks to church members

The Lord’s revealed pattern of governance by councils in his church provides for and attenuates the impact of human frailties.

Mason noted that Renlund and Stevenson have held major leadership positions with the church in foreign countries: Renlund in Africa and Stevenson in Japan.

Dieter F. Uchtdorf said Saturday that three new members will be chosen for the religion’s top governing body called the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

In August, the church for the first time in history appointed a trio of women to priesthood leadership councils, after Mormon women’s leadership roles had previously been limited to auxiliary organizations.

But with cheerfulness and gratitude, he welcomed the three newest members of the Quorum, saying, “These are men dedicated to the work of the Lord”.

“I want to witness to all of you of the strength and love President Monson has as he said to me, ‘This call comes from the Lord Jesus Christ.’ I am overwhelmed and shaken to my very core to consider the import and significance of those words so tenderly spoken by our loving prophet”, Rasband said.

Three apostles, President Boyd K. Packer, Elder L. Tom Perry and Elder Richard G. Scott passed away since the Church’s last General Conference in April.

The new appointees start as junior members, but they could someday become church president. He has been a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy since 2000 and a member of the Presidency of the Seventy since 2005. Positions in the Quorum of the Twelve come open only when an apostle passes away.

“Not in the smallest part am I able to walk in their shoes; yet I am honored to stand tall on their shoulders and carry on in the Lord’s ministry”, he said.

Elora Grant, a recent Brigham Young University graduate from Medford, Oregon, said even though Monson struggled, she still felt the spirit of his message. “I was somewhere between apoplectic and catatonic”, said Renlund, a cardiologist. We can expect the president and other senior leaders of the church will be older and spiritually seasoned men.

None of them were told who the two other choices were, having to wait like everyone else until Saturday. “They have returned to their heavenly home”. Their extended families didn’t know either.

The decisions were made by Monson.

Scholars predict that for the first time ever, at least one could be from outside North America and Europe. They are scheduled to speak later Saturday afternoon at a news conference.

Diamond said that would be a great step, acknowledging the expanding global reach of a church that has more than half of its reported 15 million members outside the U.S. Annen said she too would love to see it happen.

Stevenson, though, mentioned keeping children anchored in righteous principles is a key challenge to focus on. Uchtdorf is on the board.

How Apostles Are Chosen After continual fasting and prayer in the mountains, Jesus called twelve disciples to help preach his Gospel and provide the continuation of the church He had established.
