Indrani, 43, was rushed to JJ hospital from Byculla jail on Friday afternoon in an unconscious condition after she allegedly overdosed on anti-depressant pills.
Mukerjea regained consciousness Sunday and was “out of danger” as she responded to the treatment.
Dr T P Lahane, Dean of state run J J Hospital said that “Indrani has not regained consciousness as yet and that doctors are trying hard to revive her from her deep slumber”.
Indrani, who is in judicial custody, lodged at the Byculla women’s jail was taken to JJ Hospital on 2 October in an unconscious condition.
The U-turn came after his assertion on Saturday that Indrani’s blood showed the presence of benzodiazepines, a class of anti-anxiety drugs, based on immunoassay tests carried out at PD Hinduja hospital, Mahim. The report is positive for the drug overdose. “Possible drug overdose is ruled out”, the forensic lab’s deputy director, Nitin Chutke, told The Telegraph today. “It is only the anti-depressant that has caused the thing (collapse)”. Along with Indrani, her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and her former driver Shyamvar Rai were also nabbed, though the motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained.
The police have also extensively grilled Indrani’s husband Peter Mukerjea, though he is not an accused in the case.
Asked whether the report of overdose was wrong, Lahane said, “Whatever talk of overdose there has been, we can explain it two ways”.
Today, too, he insisted that the urine and blood tests at Hinduja had detected an overdose but added that he was “not rejecting” the forensic report, which has been sent to the state home department. According to latest reports, her condition is stable and is improving.
About the possibility of Indrani suffering memory loss, he said,”This is something only time will tell. We will consult a psychiatrist and seek opinion before discharging her”, he said. The police are investigating whether Indrani’s hospitalisation was a result of negligence or foul play.
Meanwhile, Principal Home Secretary (Prisons) Vijay Satbir Singh said the probe is looking into all aspects including whether the medicines or any other toxic substance she consumed were prescribed by the doctors and if there was an overdose, how did that happen. “Let me complete the probe, then we will take a call on the course of action”, said Singh.
