The original MacGyver series starred Richard Dean Anderson as the titular hero, and aired for seven seasons.

Director and executive producer James Wan will helm the reboot of the popular 80s show.

Like the original, MacGyver will be the focus of the show, but this time around, the series is expected to focus on his early career. It was produced by Paramount Network Television and distributed by CBS Television Distribution, and CBS is on tap to both produce and air the reboot. So in MacGyver’s case, a man in his 20s. Also, this version of MacGyver will be in is 20’s and he will be recruited into a clandestine organization, which is where he uses his unconventional skills to solve problems, all in an effort to prevent disasters from happening.

Wan was previously attached to an attempted big screen adaptation of MacGyver that never went through.

This is not the only 1980s franchise being courted for a reboot.

A spinoff series, Young MacGyver, was in the works in 2003, but only the pilot was made.
