SFR staff said if local residents do not have smoke alarms or properly working smoke alarms, they should contact SFR to request one.
Test your smoke alarms monthly and replace the batteries every spring and fall when clocks are changed for Daylight Savings Time; remember the slogan “change your clocks, change your batteries”.
Department officials will be visiting kindergarten through 5th grade classes as part of October’s Fire Prevention Month.
Even though most fires happen in the kitchen, firefighters say it’s most important to know how to react when you’re sound asleep. The Fire Department will also be handing out free smoke detectors.
Working smoke alarms are a critical fire-safety tool that can mean the difference between life and death in a home fire.
This comes just ahead of fire prevention week which will start on Sunday- October 4th.
To help ensure the safety of your family, it is a good idea to have regular discussions on what do to when a smoke detector sounds, and conduct home-fire drills.
On Saturday, Saanich Fire Department members will attend the Home Depot Fire Safety Day from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. (3986 Shelbourne St.).
“Fire Prevention Week presents the ideal opportunity to better educate the public about this potentially life-saving message”, she added.
