The Green Zone is home to the offices of the President and prime minister, to Parliament, the country’s top courts and the U.S. embassy. “We are moving ahead with our reforms and we will not step back”.

“The re-opening of the Green Zone is part of the measures we promised to our citizens”, al-Abadi was quoted as saying in the statement.

Blasts killed at least 24 people Saturday, in one of Baghdad’s main Shiite neighborhoods. It also shelters former ruler Saddam Hussein’s palaces and was converted into an administrative headquarters for the coalition forces following the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, according to CBS News.

The move comes amid a wave of protests by Iraqis in Baghdad and many southern cities calling for the provision of basic services, the trial of corrupt politicians and the shakeup of a system riddled with graft and incompetence. Last month, in a rare show of unity, the Iraqi government unanimously backed a program proposed by al-Abadi to eliminate senior government posts and slash spending.
