Destiny Is Adding Microtransactions and Purchasable Emotes
An upcoming update to Destiny – Bungie‘s hybrid shooter-slash-MMORPG – is adding microtransactions so players can buy in-game items with real-world money.

Gamers who are interested in getting access to them will be unable to do so without getting a few Silver, which is a new Destiny currency that can only be obtained through a store. Tess, the new emotes, and detailed pricing information will show up on October 13 during the weekly reset.
Bungie will also be gifting a few free Silver to Guardians to buy a new emote or two. However, Bungie is adamant that they will not abuse microtransactions, and promises to use the additional revenue in order to have more engaging community events that will be announced later this year. For now, the developer is stressing that real money spent goes toward aesthetic pleasures, like emotes, and nothing that changes the game’s action. “You’ll still receive updates to the game, and you won’t lose a Crucible encounter or fail to clear a Raid because you didn’t have the right Eververse Trading Company emote equipped”, he said. “It has been, and continues to be, our goal to deliver updates to the game”.
Either way, all players will get a little bit of “free” silver in their accounts next week as encouragement to try the new shop out. The company plans to release images and prices for these items next week.

Destiny has always been a hard game to categorize, but by selling non-essential collector’s items for money, Bungie is clearly aping the approach used by many PC massively multiplayer games.
