Boxes of Cheerios, Honey Nut Cheerios recalled for wheat contamination

Adcock’s box just made the cut with a “better if used by date” of July 30, but she says this recall makes her rethink her future purchases at the grocery store. On its last earnings call in September, the company said that gluten-free Cheerios would be “one of the largest merchandising events in our cereal business’s history”. Affected boxes of Honey Nut Cheeries include a “better if used by” date of July 12 through July 25 of 2016, with an LD plant code.

The Cheerios were made in General Mills’Lodi, Calif., plant. “Two complaints of illness have been reported directly to General Mills related to the affected products”.

In February, General Mills catered to a new market and began producing five alternative kinds of Cheerios. They are gluten-free, as the label on the box indicates.

General Mills announced that several batches of Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios produced on different dates in July are recalled. We’ll also continue to test products and our oat flour supply extensively to ensure our products meet the gluten-free standard. Those with gluten sensitivity can feel discomfort or get ill when ingesting food that contains it. However, celiac disease sufferers or those who are allergic to gluten can expect more serious reactions. The cereal, produced at a plant in California is labeled gluten-free, but actually contains wheat. No other General Mills cereals are affected.

“We are not sure how costly the recall will be”, the broker said.
